Saving money on utility costs might sound hard to do, but by taking a few steps, you can reduce your utility costs every month, which will add up in one year. You have heard that old saying, “Turn the heater down at night and during the day when you are out.” Well, if you have ever tried this, you know how cold it can get during the winter months in the house.

Instead of turning down the heat, set the thermostat lower and keep it consistent. Instead of running the heat at seventy or even sixty-eight, keep it at sixty-seven all the time. Use blankets to add extra warmth or wear warmer clothes inside the house. By reducing the gas usage, you can save money every month. When you use the oven to cook, leave the door open a bit after you are done to let that heat out into the house after you turn the oven off.

Electricity is another area where you can save money by doing a few simple things. Instead of having everything plugged in when not in use, use a surge protector and kill the power to the item when you are not using it. Even if you turn off the item, it is still plugged in and using a low amount of electricity. By turning off the power to the item, you will save money.

Computers use quite a bit of electricity especially if you leave it on all the time. Turn off the computer when you are not using it. If you are going to be gone for an hour or so, turn it off and restart it when you need it again. This will save you some more money on your utility bill.

Wrap water heaters and pipes with foam insulation to keep the temperature warmer. This will mean that you will have to wait less time for the hot water to reach the faucet and the water heater will not have to keep turning on to heat the water as much.

If you have drafty windows or doors, fix them and watch how much money you will save. There are many ways to save on utility costs.
