Four Things to Consider When Purchasing a Shredder

Today, with identity theft becoming more and more prevalent, it’s easy to see why so many people feel that they need a shredder in their home office. A shredder makes it easy to destroy personal documents, expired credit cards, and even old CD’s. If your home doesn’t have a shredder, you should probably consider putting one on your list of future purchases.

Before you go shopping for your shredder, however, you need to make a few decisions about the shredder you need. There are four basic factors that you should decide before you set foot in the office supply store:

Shredding Volume – How much shredding will you be doing? If you’re just going to shred the occasional invoice, you don’t really need to worry about having a shredder that will allow you to destroy fifteen sheets of paper at once. But, what if you have a home business? You may benefit from being able to take care of any required shredding quickly. The volume of shredding you will be doing also affects the size of bin that you will look for in your shredder.

Type of Cut – Some shredders cut paper into long strips as it destroys your documents. More advanced shredders, however, cut the strips into small bits that resemble confetti. Although these shredders are more expensive than their strip-cutting counterparts, the added security may be worth any additional cost.

The Ability to Cut Other Media – Some shredders have special slots that allow you to shred unwanted credit cards or compact discs. Again, you may not need this additional functionality if you only want to destroy the occasional piece of paper. But, if you throw these types of things away, you may enjoy the knowledge that you’ve really disposed of the information hidden away in them.

Cost – Cost probably plays an important part in any shopping decisions you make, so why wouldn’t you think about it while you’re shredder shopping? A simple, basic shredder can be yours for under $50. If you want a really advanced shredder, though, you should plan to spend around $200.
