After spending the entire year toiling away at your job, you probably need a break from the grind of day-to-day life. However, the rising costs of just about everything may put an expensive holiday out of your family’s reach. How can you get away from it all without breaking the bank?
The key to enjoying a vacation on a budget is to eliminate or control some of the more expensive aspects of a vacation. Getting creative about your vacation destination and accommodations can allow you to experience a relaxing vacation that doesn’t include excessive expenses that ruin your experience.
Stay local to avoid costly airfares.
Often, one of the most expensive components of a vacation is the airfare required to arrive at your vacation destination. By staying within a comfortable driving distance, you can eliminate that cost entirely from your vacation expenses. In addition, you won’t feel the need to rent a car once you arrive at your vacation destination, since you’ll have your car with you.
Explore your region with multiple day trips.
Hotel costs are another large part of most vacation budgets. You can avoid those costs, however, by basing your vacation out of your own home. Perhaps one day, you will drive to an attraction to the north of your home town. Then, after exploring the attraction, you can return home and sleep in your own bed. The next day, then, leaves you free to visit an attraction in a different direction from your home town.
Stay with friends or family.
If you’ve got your heart set on traveling to a far-flung destination for your holiday, you may still be able to avoid costly hotel expenses. A friend or family member who lives in or near your destination and has enough room for your entire family may be willing to let you stay with them. Now your vacation will afford you an opportunity to catch up with friends and family and enjoy the benefits of their home town. Please note, however, that you should take extra steps to be a considerate guest during this vacation to keep from wearing out your welcome.
Swap homes during your vacation.
Families who live in different cities can learn to appreciate the other family’s city by swapping homes for the duration of the vacation. Staying in a home will allow you to cook for yourself and your family during the vacation, rather than having to eat out for every meal. And by swapping homes, rather than staying with your friend, you can avoid any conflicts that sometimes arise during extended visits.
