Bridging the Gap: What to Do When Your Spending Exceeds Your Income

When you sit down to plan your expenditures at the beginning of each month, there may be times when your planned expenditures outnumber your income. Sometimes, you can simply delay or cut some expenditures from your plan to equalize your budget. Other times, however, you won’t have that type of flexibility with your expenditures. How do you close that gap when you can’t cut your expenses?

The secret to equalizing any budget is to decrease your expenses or increase your income. In instances that don’t allow you to decrease your expenses, then, your only option is to increase your income. To create a short-term bump in your income you can try one of these ways to find extra money.

Get a second job. A part-time job can allow you to catch up on expenses and sock a little extra money away for a rainy day. If you’re worried that you may not be able to sustain two jobs for a long period of time, you may be able to get a seasonal job. Then, you and the employer will be able to part ways happily at the end of the season.

Sell forgotten valuables. Many people have plenty of extra stuff hidden away in their garage. Take inventory of things you no longer use and sell them. You can sell them on websites like Craig’s List or through a classified ad in your local paper.

Sell your services. If you have a talent, you may be able to use it to pad your income. Artists may be able to find freelance work designing newsletters or flyers. Crafters may be able to sell some of their handiwork. You may be able to find a way to put your talents to work by networking with friends or checking out freelance websites.

Baby-sit. Baby-sitting has always been a good way to earn a little extra cash. If you are a mom who spends her day at home looking after her family, you could provide a valuable service to other moms in your neighborhood by taking care of their children. Mention to a friend or two that you are interested in taking care of a child or two, along with your own, and you’ll be surprised how many people will contact you about their children.
